Lawful bases and data protection rights

Under UK data protection law, we must have a "lawful basis" for collecting and using your personal information. Which lawful basis we rely on may affect your data protection rights, summarised below.

  • Right of access — you can ask us for copies of your personal information.

  • Right to rectification — you can ask us to correct or delete information you think is inaccurate or incomplete.

  • Right to erasure — you can ask us to delete your personal information.

  • Right to restriction of processing — you can ask us to limit how we use your personal information.

  • Right to object to processing — you can object to our processing of your personal data.

  • Right to data portability — you can ask us to transfer your information to another organisation, or to you.

  • Right to withdraw consent — where we use consent as our lawful basis, you can withdraw it at any time.

If you make a request, we will respond without undue delay and within one month. To make a request, contact us using the details above.

Our lawful bases for collecting or using personal information to provide and improve products and services for clients:

Legitimate interests — all data protection rights may apply except the right to portability. Our legitimate interest: We use enquirers' names and contact details to respond to enquiries made through our website, discuss the services we offer, and follow up about potential future work. This is necessary so we can reply to people who have proactively contacted us and maintain a record of prospective clients. It benefits the enquirer directly (a response to their query, and the option of us following up later) and carries minimal risk — only the information they choose to provide is used, solely for that purpose, and it is not shared with third parties or used for anything else without further consent.

Our lawful basis for information updates or marketing purposes:

Consent — all data protection rights may apply except the right to object. You have the right to withdraw consent at any time.

Our lawful basis for dealing with queries, complaints or claims:

Legitimate interests — all data protection rights may apply except the right to portability. Our legitimate interest: We use enquirers' names, contact details and correspondence to deal with queries or complaints raised with us. This is necessary so we can investigate and respond properly. It benefits the person raising the matter by ensuring it is handled properly, and carries minimal risk, since the information is only used to resolve that specific matter and is not shared with third parties or used for any other purpose.

Where we get personal information from

Directly from you.

How long we keep information

We keep your personal information for as long as we need it to respond to your enquiry and follow up about working together — typically until you ask us to delete it, or until it's been 3 years since we were last in contact, at which point we'll review and delete it if nothing has progressed. If your enquiry leads to us working together, we keep your information for longer, as set out in our client agreement. If you've opted in to receive updates, we'll keep your details until you unsubscribe or, if we haven't sent any updates within 12 months, we'll review and remove them.
